Get on your bike!
Just when we hoped health & safety madness was coming to an end, the newspapers and media cover the policeman, without his cycling proficiency certificate, refusing to sit on a bicycle for a promotional photograph.
And to add more fuel to the fire his superior officer agreed that the policeman had made the right decision.
I have searched high and low in newspapers since for a genuine health and safety report; what about the chap who died falling from scaffolding; the woman scarred for life after slipping and plunging her arm in hot fat in a deep fat fryer or the person who fell through an open cellar trapdoor in their public house and broke both legs.
Key Facts, published by the HSE, showed that in 2007/08 2.1 million people were suffering from an illness (long-standing as well as new cases) they believed was caused or made worse by their current or past work; 1.3 million related specifically to that year and 563,000 were new cases. 229 workers were killed at work, and 136,771 injuries so severe that they were reportable with a staggering loss of 34 million working days.
It’s time we all got on our bike and take steps within our own organisation to reduce the risk of accidents at work. And it’s time for the press and media to give better coverage to real health & safety issues. As for the policeman: good luck with the test!
