No,
not to do with food this time, but the potential legal right for
employees to demand training. Some 25 million employees are set to
benefit from a new law which will give each employee who has worked for
a company for at least six months the right to request training
relevant to their job. Employers will have to seriously consider the
requests they receive. Employees will be able to request to undertake
both accredited courses that lead to a qualification and unaccredited
training. I can see it now: thousands of workers demanding to be trained and training companies making their fortunes! Wait
a minute though isnt it a legal requirement now for all staff to be
training commensurate to their work activity in Food Safety and Health
& Safety? It has been a legal requirement for many years, but
thousands of workers go untrained, resulting in avoidable accidents and
deaths every year. One must question why we do not make training to level 2 mandatory rather than having this all-embracing requirement. The
practical result will be companies that train their staff are likely to
receive more requests for training, while those that ignore the issue
will simply go on ignoring it - and any requests from staff will be
sidelined. In the case of the latter situation, employees will be
either unaware of their legal right to suitable training or they will
be too afraid to ask for it, which is likely to contribute to staff
turnover and dissatisfaction. Which type of company are you?
