Get on your bike!
Just when we hoped health & safety madness was coming to an end, the newspapers and media cover the policeman, without his cycling proficiency certificate, refusing to sit on a bicycle for a promotional photograph.
And to add more fuel to the fire his superior officer agreed that the policeman had made the right decision.
I have searched high and low in newspapers since for a genuine health and safety report; what about the chap who died falling from scaffolding; the woman scarred for life after slipping and plunging her arm in hot fat in a deep fat fryer or the person who fell through an open cellar trapdoor in their public house and broke both legs.
Key Facts, published by the HSE, showed that in 2007/08 2.1 million people were suffering from an illness (long-standing as well as new cases) they believed was caused or made worse by their current or past work; 1.3 million related specifically to that year and 563,000 were new cases. 229 workers were killed at work, and 1...

Scores on the Doors
There has been much debate over recent months regarding principles such as earned autonomy and the method of implementation of Scores on the Doors.
Scores on the Doors certainly benefits the raising of consumer awareness but inconsistency of application does not necessarily facilitate an accurate picture of business compliance. Furthermore, newspaper headlines such as those leveled at the performance of Wolverhampton Council regarding the kebab shop owner preparing food whilst a member of staff lay dead on the sofa next to him certainly dent business confidence in EHOs and result in the call for earned autonomy which ultimately may not improve consumer confidence in food safety.
As such with these issues in mind it is clear that food hygiene policing lies at a crossroads. Consumer confidence in perceived hygiene standards in critcal to both commercial businesses and enforcing authorities and it is therefore surely the target of businesses and enforcers to put their re...

Christmas decorations banned
The Health and Safety Executive are trying hard to destroy the myth that everyday events such as throwing snowballs or putting up christmas decorations have been baned in the name of health and safety.
It seems that almost every week we hear of another event cancelled, and the organisers invariably cite some health and safety issue as the cause. Pancake races banned; Guy Fawkes bonfire replaced with a projected image; newly graduated prevented from throwing mortar boards in the air following their ceremony.
In response to these stories, the HSE has devoted its calendar to this subject for 2009 with the intention of resolving these concerns.
Will it work? i doubt it. its not over zealous enforcement by Health & Safety Officers thats preventing these activities. In most cases the problem begins and ends with event insurers, or should i say the failure of insurers to take on the risk without applying unrealistic premiums, excesses or restrictions. Ho...

Pennington Report

" No parent should have to worry that their child is going to get sick from thier lunch."

"We owe it to the memory of Mason Jones to learn the lessons from his Outbreak and to remember them.."

Two statements. You might guess that they were both from The Public Inquiry into the September 2005 Outbreak of E.coli 0157 in South Wales, which was published on 19 March 2009.
You would though be wrong. The first was made by President Barack Obama announcing tough new measures for food safety control in the USA.
Similar statements in two different countries within days of each other concerning the safety of food provided to children. This is a global problem and has a global impact, yet few food manufactures, caterers and retailers handling food will be aware of these statements or more importantly, the importance of their message.
Professor Pennington, Chairman of this in...

Please sir, I want some more...
No, not to do with food this time, but the potential legal right for employees to demand training. Some 25 million employees are set to benefit from a new law which will give each employee who has worked for a company for at least six months the right to request training relevant to their job.
Employers will have to seriously consider the requests they receive. Employees will be able to request to undertake both accredited courses that lead to a qualification and unaccredited training.
I can see it now: thousands  of workers demanding to be trained and training companies making their fortunes!
Wait a m...
