Virgin Atlantic Airways has become the second largest long-haul international airline, operating services out of London's Heathrow and Gatwick Airports to 22 destinations all over the world - from Shanghai to the Caribbean and, of course, the US.
The challenge
Virgin has a considerable number of staff that all needed to be comprehensively trained in food safety. With these large numbers, Virgin did not have a sufficient amount of trainers to complete the task internally. They decided that they had to outsource the training.
However, airline food safety is quite unique. So they had to find a company that understood the industry. As well as this, they needed a company that could adapt to their varied work programme.
sts-solutions were on hand to help.
The solution
The main focus of the training was to raise awareness of basic food hygiene standards. We were able to tailor the course so that it specifically related to the airlines’ exact requirements. This involved creating situations and challenges that crew members could be faced with. To do this we worked closely with managers and staff at all levels of the company.
We also developed a booklet specifically for the crew’s use. The purpose of this was to reinforce important points of the training. It covered aspects of the course and highlighted Virgin’s commitment to food safety.
Our previous experience of working with airlines meant that we understood the industry. We could relate to the working environment, were aware of certain procedures and had a working knowledge of the aircraft.
We could also offer Virgin a flexible work programme. For example, to cover situations where they needed to cancel for any reason, or they needed to add an extra day. We were able to adapt and accommodate their needs accordingly.
Creating relationships
Since working with Virgin we have developed a strong relationship with both crew and managers.
As well as the initial training, we have also helped managers at Virgin to train staff themselves.
The airline is constantly expanding. As staff numbers increase, further training is required, so our relationship with Virgin will hopefully continue to grow.
Testimonial
‘We were very pleased at the high standard of training and advice that sts could offer our company. We were not expecting to be working with trainers with such an in-depth knowledge of an airline environment and procedures.
During the training they were very open to involving managers at all levels and very eager to offer advice and help in any way. All in all, we were very happy with their friendly, simple approach to training and should we need further training down the line we will definitely be calling on sts-solutions.’
