How do we comply with the food hygiene training laws in practice?
Relevant industry guidance indicates that in order to comply with the law for training of food handlers, that:
All food handlers receive instruction in essentials of food safety before starting work, and awareness level training within 4 weeks.
High risk food handlers receive formal Level 2 food safety training within 3 months (or training to an equivalent standard).
It is recommended that those responsible for supervising food handlers receive training equivalent to Level 3 standard, and Level 4 training is good practice for owners/managers.
What are the legal requirements for food hygiene training?
It is a legal requirement that food businesses ensure that:
Food handlers are supervised, instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters commensurate with their work activities
Those responsible for developing and maintaining procedures based on HACCP principals receive adequate training in the application of the HACCP principal.
