Unexpected ingredient leads to £1000 fine
A bakery in County Antrim has been fined £1000 after a customer found a dead mouse embedded in a loaf of bread. During the court case, the defendant claimed the mouse had been planted by a rival, and said that at the time of the contamination there were 131 bait stations in the bakery.
Moreover, the company said it had rigorous daily inspections, an audit every six weeks and a twice-yearly visit from two field biologists looking for signs of infestation. It also employers two full time cleaners.
The judge heard that the business, which has been established in the town for over 60 years, had never had a complaint against it.
The prosecuting lawyer said the mouse had probably got into one of the bread tins between the process of oiling the tins and adding the bread dough. She said the tins were oiled at night and then filled the following morning. "In fairness to the defendant they have engaged pest control services who regularly inspect the premises and did so before this incident", she said.
Imposing the fine, the judge said he had to take into account public concern over food safety.
